The village is located in southern Lamalera Lembata Island, East Nusa Tenggara have unusual livelihood, that is chasing the Pope. Whales to be hunted is the kind of Sperm whales and pilot whales. They do not hunt Blue Whales because they believe that the Blue Whale is a Whale rescue their ancestors.
Do not imagine people Lamalera hunt whales with modern equipment such as weapons archer or a large boat with a fast machine, they hunt down the Pope only to capitalize wooden boat with a length of about 15 meters and a width of only about 2 feet and armed with bamboo called Tempulin and tipped wrought iron like an arrow, called Harpoon.
Whale hunting season is from May to October when the sea was calm. Before starting the hunt for the Pope, community Lamalera perform traditional rituals. On 28 or 29 April, Wujon Tribe who live on the mountain will come down to the beach and called the pope prayed. On 30 and 31 April all communities Lamalera will pray for the safety of fishermen who will go to the sea and prayed for the people who died at sea. They pray according to the Christian religion in front of the pulpit on the beach and covered with pieces of chicken or pork. Then in steps 1 May, only one boat that can go out and start searching the Pope, namely Paraso Sapang boat, the boat is signaling interest in Lamalera teretua.
If Paraso Sapang that day managed to find the Pope, then 19 other ships may go out and hunt these whales. If Paraso Sapang not find the Pope, then the search will resume tomorrow along with 19 other boats. The boat is 20 indicates the number of tribes in Lamalera.
In the one boat, there are three positions, namely Lamuri in control boat or steering the boat interpreter. Matros, crew boats and Lamafa, the most important position in the whaling, that is, those who stood at the end of the boat and speared the Pope. Not just anyone can become Lamafa and Lamuri, only people who have a special talent or who have children that can be served.
When they saw the Pope then they would shout "Baleo, Baleo!" which means the Pope in language Lamalera. then the ship will be approximately 1-2 feet closer to the Pope, and Pope Lamafa will jump up and speared the bottom of the heart towards the right fin Pope Pope. need several times a spear and a long time until the Pope is really dead and it takes guts to hunt whales, because the stakes are life.
